RE: The OBX Report

I was in the Morehead City area last week and it was pretty smoky on Wednesday when the winds kicked in from the north. It sounds like the fire is pretty hard to fight as it is burning in the peat material five feet underground. On a TV news report last week, Holiday Trav-L Park in Emerald Isle said their reservations were down 18 percent. We were a part of that. We rented a house instead of pulling the camper.

RE: bush gardens VA.

Here's what I found about the Pottery: Richmond Times-Dispatch Published: May 2, 2008 The Williamsburg Pottery is taking bids to sell the 1,200 acres of property that it sits on, but the 70-year-old pottery business is not for sale. “Williamsburg Pottery is not for sale,” an emphatic Peter Kao, company director and vice president, said in a phone interview this afternoon. “We are selling the land. That’s it.” Kao said the retail business was doing “very very well” and that it would continue on if and when the property is sold. In a statement issued this afternoon, Kim Maloney, president and chief executive of the company, reiterated what Kao had said. “Our only plan for the Pottery is to continue to offer the highest quality goods at terrific Pottery prices as we have for 70 years,” Maloney said in the statement. “I sincerely regret any confusion.” The owners are seeking bids to sell the land. The deadline is July 1. I sure hope it doesn't close. I used to live about 30 minutes from it when I was a little girl. I loved going there and the Williamsburg Candle Factory, which is now closed. I figured all the Outlets in the area would doom the Pottery. I about don't recognize the area anymore when I visit. BTW, have a great time at Busch Gardens. For a theme park, the food is pretty good. The Smokehouse in New France is good and I love the Festhaus in Germany. The German potato salad is great.

RE: Key West, St. Augustine, Carrabelle restaurant help!

Here are some of favorites in St. Augustine (used to live there): The Columbia on St. George Street O'Steens on Anastasia Blvd. for the best fried shrimp (but they do have chicken for you) Saltwater Cowboys, Creekside Diner or Fiddlers Green (all owned by the same people) Spanish Bakery - St. George Street for small meals, they have great empanadas The Oasis or Sunset Grille in St. Augustine Beach for decent food and ambiance While in Florida, the best grocery stores are Publix. I wish they were in NC, closest thing we have is Harris Teeter. Publix's bakery is the best, it's where my wedding cake came from.

RE: Are the Carolina Lakes full yet ?

Lake Norman, Lake Wylie and High Rock are all at full pond. Just spent the weekend at High Rock and the water is around 75 degrees. High Rock Lake campground is very nice, it's just outside Lexington, NC. Others try Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury. Don't know much about Lake Norman, too busy for my taste.

RE: Looking for someplace within 1.5 hours of Greensboro NC

I highly recommend High Rock Lake Campground. It's a short trip from there to the transportation museum. Maybe 20 minutes. They haven't been totally full on the weekends yet, with the exception of last weekend. Their pool is now open, you can rent a boat, or go fishing from their pier. Their number is 800-382-3239. It is going to be your closest campground to the museum if Dan Nicholas is full. Lake Myers I would stay away from, I went once and won't go back. Another option would be Fleetwork RV Resort next to Lowe's Motorspeedway in Concord, but it is basically a gravel field.

RE: Cost of campground rates going up...........

Now wouldn't it make sense with fuel prices being so high that campgrounds and hotels would reduce or hold steady with their rates? A hotel I would stay in near my grandmother's house in Richmond, VA(Hampton Inn) has gone from $65/night to $125/night in under two years. I feel that we sure aren't being enticed to travel.

RE: Looking for best ocean front camping in NC or SC

I second Holiday Trav-L Park in Emerald Isle, NC. I also guess it depends on what kind of beach that you want to go to. Emerald Isle doesn't have the shows, theme parks and shopping like Myrtle offers, but if you want a serene area with lots of state and national parks nearby, then it's the area for you. Within 5 miles you have Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro. Within 20-30 miles, you have Ft. Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach and Cape Lookout National Seashore. The area is a kayaker's dream. I also like to beach a boat on Shackleford Banks and watch the wild ponies as the saunter by.

RE: looking for nc campgrounds

Definitely try High Rock Campground. It's only 45 minutes from Concord. We go up Hwy. 49 to Hwy. 8. It's far enough away but still close to home. We've been going there for 6 years. It has full hookup. Dan Nicholas is also nice, but no full hookups. Try Mountain Stream RV Park outside Marion, NC for mountain trips, takes about 2 hours to get there. Stay away from Lake Myers and the other one in Mocksville. We have also tried Cross Country and Wildlife Woods by Lake Norman, neither is much to write home about.

RE: Tamarac Marina and Campground

From 49, turn right onto Morehead Road in Harrisburg. This puts you right at the track. Usually there is not a lot of traffic coming from this direction. Avoid the interstate at all costs. Most people get off on Speedway Blvd. by Concord Mills and it is a parking lot and you would mostly likely miss the first part of the race.

RE: NC Coastal Camp sites

I'm getting ready to cancel my reservations tomorrow for the third week of June at Holiday Trav-L Park in Emerald Isle if you're interested in that time frame. Cost of gas/diesel is making our decision. I like Holiday Trav-L Park, but rates during season are $80/night, then $4/night for extra people (more than two people per site).

RE: i guess we will camp closer to home

We usually head to the beach (Emerald Isle)in June with our fiver. But this year, we rented a house instead. We would have to take two vehicles, one to pull the fiver, the other the boat. Plus we can't keep the boat or a second vehicle on the site during the summer season, would have to keep it in a storage area. Then we would have to deal with boat ramps, which are few and far between in this area. So we found a house with a boat dock. We'll be saving diesel by not pulling the fiver, can keep the other vehicle at home, and jump in the boat any time we want. We figure we are saving over $500 in fuel just to and from the coast. Hopefully fuel prices will come down by Thanksgiving. We used to haul the fiver over to the beach for Thanksgiving week. This gas thing is really starting to crimp my style!!!

RE: NC zoo

There's Zooland, though I'm not sure how nice it is as I've never been there. There's Holly Bluff campground on Hwy. 49 outside Asheboro. I have heard this can be a little on the "redneck" side. I would highly suggest High Rock Lake Campground in Lexington, off Hwy. 8. It's about a 45 minute drive to the zoo from this campground. It is very clean, you can fish, rent a boat, etc.

RE: Statesville N.C. campgrounds

Check out High Rock Lake Campground outside of Lexington, NC. It is about 6 miles off I-85 and about 45 minutes north of the Speedway. It is close to RCR and the Childress Winery. It is very clean and quiet. I would not recommend Lake Myers or Midway in Mocksville, been to both and NEVER again.

RE: "Bullitt" Mustang

I lllloooovvvveee my Mustang GT. I would like a Bullitt but mine is paid for, and I like that better. But mine does have a Bullitt fuel door. If you don't already belong, check out the Mustang Club of America. They have all kinds of events across the country and every member is crazy about their cars.

RE: Good News! I am Cancer Free!

Yes, having cancer (or for that matter any long term illness) definitely makes you rearrange your priorities in life. Life is precious and very short. So I am making sure to have fun and not worry about the small stuff. Also work is just that, work. It is not my life. It will not say on my epitaph that I worked 80 hours a week, it will say that I was a loving wife and mother. That is what counts! I have a friend also battling colon cancer that has been given 9 months to live. So he and his wife are taking a cruise and trying to make the most of his remaining time.

RE: Good News! I am Cancer Free!

Art, I'm sorry to hear about your wife. I will keep her in my prayers. I have a long list of cancer patients I'm praying for. I hope that one day in the very near future we will see a cure. Too many people are suffering. MD Anderson is a great facility and she is in good hands.

Good News! I am Cancer Free!

As some of you may remember, I was diagnosed in November 2006 with stage 3C rectal cancer. I have been through chemo and radiation, surgery, tests, another surgery, more tests, emergency surgery, and more chemo that ended last November. I am happy to say that I have made it. My CT scan performed on Monday showed no signs of cancer and I have joined Club NED (No Evidence of Disease). I am living proof that prayer does indeed work!

RE: gem hunting north carolina

I have been to Emerald Village in Little Switzerland, NC a couple times and really enjoyed myself. I was last there in August and found some very nice aquamarines, even had one cut which turned out beautiful. It is close to the Spruce Pine area, and not too far off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here is a link: Emerald Village
